Old garbage disposal, jammed and leaking
Works from home with two kids under six in the house. Friendly, busy, and on the phone a lot.
What you know walking in
Service call. Garbage disposal hums but will not turn. Customer says it has been loud for months. Not a member.
- 1/3 horsepower garbage disposal, 14 yrs
- Kitchen sink base cabinet
What you found
- A metal bottle cap jammed the grinder. It is out, and the disposal turns again.
- Water drips from the bottom of the disposal when it runs. The internal seal has failed, and a disposal that leaks from its body cannot be repaired.
- The bottom of the housing is rusted and it grinds loudly. At 14 years it is at the end of its life.
- The cabinet floor under the sink is damp and starting to swell.
- The sink drains normally with the disposal off. The drain line is not part of the problem.
