Repipe · Paul Lindqvist
1960s galvanized pipe, low water pressure
Retired aerospace engineer. Courteous and precise, with a notebook out and questions ready.
What you know walking in
Service call. Low water pressure throughout the house, worst at the back bathroom, and rusty water after the water has sat overnight. Single-story home on a raised foundation, built in 1962. Not a member.
- Galvanized steel water supply lines, 64 yrs
- Copper water service line from the meter, 21 yrs
- Cast iron drain lines, 64 yrs
What you found
- Static pressure at the front hose bib is 64 psi. The city supply and the service line are fine.
- The kitchen faucet flows 1.1 gallons per minute against its 1.8 rating, and the back shower drops to 0.8 when the kitchen runs. The pipe is restricting flow.
- A 3/4-inch section removed at the water heater has an inside opening of about 0.3 inches, down from about 0.82 when new. Rust fills the rest.
- Two pinhole leaks in the crawlspace in six years, both clamped. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside, so more leaks are likely.
- Water runs brown for a few seconds after sitting overnight.
